B3157 Road Safety Improvements – Feedback to Dorset County Council

Report to Parish Council 7 December 2011

The Parish ClerkÕs prŽcis of comments received by the Parish Council is appended. A number of them concern matters where we had been informed previously by DCC that we would not get what we wanted (20 mph speed limit, pedestrian crossing), or where opinion was divided or even against the proposal (raised footpaths, white lines outside the village). I suggest that we confine our comments to works in the village, and that while we might regret not getting our way on the speed limit and pedestrian crossing, we should focus our comments on where we might get some more immediate benefit.

I propose that the PC writes to DCC along the following lines:

ÒSalutations

B3157 Safety Improvements in Burton Bradstock Village

The village has had the benefit of the improvement works for more than 6 months now, and having sought feedback from the local community I am writing to set out the Parish CouncilÕs views.

Overall the Parish Council is pleased with the works, and thinks that they have greatly improved pedestrian safety in the village – thank you.

There are however some comments that the Parish Council has in relation to works that are either outstanding or which it believes should be undertaken as follows:

1.     The double yellow lines at the junction of Charles Road with Barr Lane need reinstating. Cars parking near the junction are causing a hazard.

2.     The yellow grit colouring the footpaths has largely been lost. Possibly it was not properly laid/ rolled into the surface and most of it is now probably blocking your gulleys! A reapplication would be helpful in maintaining a clear distinction between the pedestrian and traffic areas.

3.     The Parish Council is disappointed with the village signs, particularly as it was looking for something distinctive for the village. Is it possible to replace the current signs, perhaps involving a local contribution to the costs?

4.     Resurfacing works are needed throughout most of the village.

The Parish Council still aspires to a 20 mph speed limit, extending the village speed limit to Beach Road and pedestrian crossings, but appreciates that these are matters outside the scope of what might be possible in the short term.

The Parish Council would appreciate your comments on the above 4 points.

If you have any queries please contact me.

Yours etc

Parish Clerk

PrŽcis of Comments received regarding Road Safety Improvements to the B3157

1)    Poor standard of finish on footpaths, unacceptable and will not stand the test of time.

2)    The footpaths should be proud to the road, possibly with bollards along the edge.

3)    There is a problem still with cars parking on the road and footpath, particularly near the Reading Room.

4)    Double yellow lines need to be re-instated at the corner of Charles Road and Barr Lane, major problem for those turning into the Main Road. The alignment of the new kerb in Charles Road is wrong and tends to force eastbound traffic towards the oncoming traffic. Considerable number of tyre marks on the new kerb stones indicates that vehicles are contacting the kerb due to the alignment.

5)    Central white lines that have been removed on the Coast Road as not improved road safety.

6)    The removal of white lines in the village is good, it would be good to remove excess signage as well.

7)    The Village Gateway signs are poor and there was little consultation on the design of them.

8)    The main road through the village needs to be resurfaced.

9)    There is no response to the provision of a pedestrian crossing and the reduction to 20mph through the village, two main areas that parishioners requested.
